Citizen Khan Bowls Over Birmingham.

Filming has started on series five of Citizen Khan with production kicking off in the sitcom’s heartland of Birmingham.

The spirited Community Leader, Mr. Khan, has been causing shenanigans and tomfoolery across the city from the family’s own area of Sparkhill to the iconic Edgbaston Cricket Ground. In the historic Jewellery Quarter there was even a ‘Peaky Blinders’ moment with the crew recreating a scene from the Birmingham gangster drama as Mr Khan clashes with a local family.

The new series will see creator Adil Ray return to the title role alongside Shobu Kapoor, who plays Mrs Khan; Abdullah Afzal, who plays son-in-law Amjad with Krupa Pattani and Bhavna Limbachia, who play daughters Shazia and Alia.

Adil Ray said: "It felt great to be filming the scenes in Birmingham. To meet so many young children and families reminded me why we do this job! It feels like such an important time to be filming a show like ours."

Now one of the longest running sitcoms on the BBC, the fifth series sees The Khan family expanding a lot more than just Mr. Khan's waistline. We meet Shazia's new baby daughter Nadiya, named after the Bake Off queen, Mr Khan's rebellious niece Shabana and as Alia continues her on-off relationship with boyfriend Scab, The Khan's invite over the 'potential' in-laws.

Add to that a family funeral, a Muslim fun day, a celebrity appearance and flashbacks to the time when Mr and Mrs Khan first got married it's fair to say The Khans could be the busiest family on television this Autumn.

Set in Birmingham’s Sparkhill area, the exterior scenes for Citizen Khan are all filmed in and around the city. Citizen Khan is a warm, family-based sitcom about the British-Asian Khan family and the ups and downs of their lives. The series is produced by BBC In-house Comedy and shot on location in Birmingham and in front of a studio audience at MediaCityUK, Salford.

Joe Godwin, Director of BBC Midlands said: “For the past four years, Citizen Khan has brought life in Birmingham to BBC ONE prime time, so it’s really great that all the location filming is taking place here in the West Midlands.”

Citizen Khan is commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, and Shane Allen, Controller of Comedy Commissioning. The Executive Producer is Rebecca Papworth. Citizen Khan was created by Adil Ra. This series is written by Anil Gupta, Richard Pinto (The Kumars at No 42, Goodness Gracious Me, The Impressions Show) Adil Ray (Darling Rafi, Bellamy's People) and this series they are joined by James Cary (Bluestone 42, Miranda).
